Stop At: Tallinn Old Town, City Center, Tallinn Estonia

Tallinn is the best preserved medieval city in Northern Europe boasting Gothic spires, winding cobblestone streets and enchanting architecture.

Once a home to wealthy merchants settling from Germany, Denmark and beyond, Tallinn Old Town today is enjoyed by locals and visitors alike, with restaurants, bars, museums and galleries bringing much life to this historical city centre.

Unlike many other capital cities in Europe, Tallinn has managed to wholly preserve its structure of medieval and Hanseatic origin. Due to its exceptionally intact 13th century city plan, the Old Town was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997, joining the ranks of the world’s most recognised landmarks. Here you'll find original cobblestone streets dotted with medieval churches and grandiose merchant houses, barns and warehouses many of which date back to the Middle Ages.

Explore how Estonian sauna culture has developed - while enjoying a sauna! We'll start by discussing ancient sweat culture and its earliest origins here among Finno-Ugric peoples and finally look at why the sauna is still important to Estonians today. In between, we'll also look at old beliefs, new science, and interesting traditions. The event takes place at Heldeke, an underground theatre and sauna in the vibrant Kalamaja district of Tallinn, a short stroll from the old town. Everyone is welcome, including groups and solo travellers, and you'll be able to enjoy the sauna at your own pace with everything explained. There is also a bar and your first drink is included (beer, cider or birch juice).

Heldeke! is a new underground theatre and bar that is also home to Tallinn's coolest sauna (although not literally). It's located in the vibrant community of Kalamaja, a short stroll from the Old Town. The venue itself has its own colourful and controversial place in sauna history, which is revealed when exploring the longer story of sauna culture in Estonia. It's certainly off the tourist trail. The sauna has 'home rules', which means swimming clothes are optional and women are welcome to go in separately when they wish. The bar is well stocked with interesting Estonian drinks you are welcome to purchase, including a wide selection of alcohol-free options, while food is already included in the experience.
